Agriculture Camp: From the Hoop House to Homemade Bison Jerky

Today's Agriculture Camp was another fun and productive day filled with hands-on learning, teamwork, and delicious food!

The morning began in the hoop house, where campers worked alongside Kailey, harvesting fresh carrots and sweet strawberries. The students learned about growing food locally, caring for the garden, and the rewards of harvesting produce they helped cultivate.

After their time in the hoop house, the group headed to the processing plant to continue learning about food preservation and local resources. The bison meat had been marinating for 24 hours, so the campers gloved up and carefully loaded the dehydrator to begin making homemade bison jerky. This hands-on activity allowed participants to learn traditional and practical skills while gaining an appreciation for the process of preserving wild game.

To wrap up the busy morning, Billie prepared a delicious lunch of chicken bacon ranch pasta, giving everyone a chance to relax and refuel after a day of hard work and learning.

A special quyanaa to OHNC Board Member Heidi Christensen, who stopped by to lend a hand and spend time with our campers. We truly appreciate community leaders who take the time to support our youth and our programs.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the Old Harbor Native Corporation for providing the dedicated staff who make these camps possible. Their support allows us to provide meaningful, hands-on experiences that teach agriculture, food security, cultural traditions, and life skills to the youth of Old Harbor.

We are proud of all of our campers for their enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
